The old "swipe up" is gone, and the good news is you no longer need 10,000 followers to share a link. Any account can add a clickable link to an Instagram Story using the link sticker. Here's how to do it, how to make the link trackable, and what to do if the sticker is missing.
Add a link with the link sticker
- Create your Story (photo or video), then tap the sticker icon at the top.
- Choose the Link sticker.
- Paste your URL and tap Done. Tip: tap the sticker to customize its text (e.g. "Shop now", "Read more") instead of showing the raw URL.
- Place and size the sticker, then share your Story. Viewers tap it to open the link.
Make the link short, branded and trackable
Pasting a long URL works, but you'll have no idea how many people tapped it — Instagram doesn't show link clicks to most accounts. Use a free short link instead so you get your own click analytics:
- Shorten the URL with lynkily to get a clean, branded link.
- Add UTM parameters (e.g.
utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=story) so it shows up correctly in your analytics — build them with the free UTM builder. - See taps by time, location and device in your dashboard — and compare Stories against your other channels.
Use one link-in-bio for everything permanent
Stories disappear after 24 hours. For links you always want available, add a link-in-bio page and keep it in your profile — then your Story link can point to a specific offer while your bio holds the rest. See how to add a link in bio on Instagram and the full link-in-bio guide.
Link sticker missing? Fixes
- Update the app — the link sticker rolled out to all accounts, but old app versions may not have it.
- Verify your account basics — brand-new or restricted accounts can have sticker limits; posting normally for a while usually clears it.
- Check the link — Instagram blocks some flagged domains. A clean short link avoids false positives.
- Restart the app or reinstall if the sticker tray isn't loading.
Get more taps
- Tell people to tap — a quick "tap the link 👆" beats a bare sticker.
- Customize the sticker text to match the offer.
- Put the sticker where thumbs are, and keep the destination fast and mobile-friendly.
